The framework is broken down into three bands for differing project values: up to £5m, £5m to £30m, and £30m+. Construction work to be delivered through the framework is expected to include new laboratories, academic spaces, catering, accommodation, sports facilities and work on listed buildings. The framework runs for an initial two years, with the potential for an extension of three years.
- Balfour Beatty, BAM, Bouygues, Kier and Laing O’Rourke are selected for projects worth more than £30m.
- Kier, RG Carter and SDC have been chosen for mid-sized projects.
- Conamar, Kier, Quinn, RG Carter and SDC share the sub-£5m projects

Kier is therefore the only contractor selected for all three bands, having delivered more than £200m of projects for the university, including a new £79m research facility in the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
Mark Dady, managing director for Kier construction eastern, said: “We’re extremely pleased to have been awarded a place on this major framework with a key client like Cambridge University. We have an excellent working relationship with the University and are looking forward to this next phase of work with them.”
Laing O’Rourke director Paul Sheffield was also excited. Laing O’Rourke has previously worked with the University of Cambridge on the Judge Business School, the Department of Mathematics phases one and two, and the Cancer Research UK headquarters.
Paul Sheffield said: “It is great to be able to extend our deep and long standing relationship with the University of Cambridge. There is a wide range of projects available through the framework and we are excited to be given the opportunity to put our expertise to good use and meet the needs of such a prestigious institution.”
